Default A good starter SHO

For anyone considering building up a fast SHO (maybe the fastest track SHO in the country?), I will be selling my SHO in a few weeks (just in time for the convention!). I hate to do this, but we bought a small cabin up in the high country and I want to simplify my life. I still plan on keeping the other white SHO and the twin turbo BMW so I'm not abandoning speed for the moment.

Here is some info on the car. I'll post more as I get it ready for selling:

Engine:
3.2 liter - low compression slugs
rods - shaved and shot peaned
new crank (out of a 70k motor) - standard bearing size
heads are ported and oversized valves (+1mm)
Stage 2 cams
Australian made valve springs (the good ones - not the SS units)
intake manifold has been worked over with larger bore and removed and plugged secondary valves
V2-SQ blower
Rickety Headers and large out the side exhaust
dyno'd 499 at the wheels, but also has a 520 at the wheels dyno (I don't have that record).
Nascar Setrab 24" engine oil cooler

Body / Suspension:
Coil Overs on all 4 sides
Baer Brakes on Front with TCE light weight hat/rotor
Full 10 point roll cage
New Recaro seats
Custom dash with full instrumentation
Secondary Knock Monitor and Sensor (Link)
PLX Wide Band O2 Monitor and combination sweep/digital gauge
Front and Rear functioning air damns

Transmission:
Quaife
Full tranny cooler setup with pump, cooler, etc
IPT 6 Puck clutch

Other:
- Water Injection kit (cooling Mist - 2 stage)
- Battery Box in trunk w/ switch
- Halon Fire extinguishing system
- Boost-A-Pump
- 190 lph pump
- 9" wide front wheels and 8" wide rear - very expensive ultra light - may sell separately)

I've not updated the pictures recently, but here are some of the old links:

So does that mean you are now a "Cabin Boy"? LOL. Well congrats on the new place and all, but one has to wonder..... How many of my arms and legs do I have to give to get this beaustiful beast in my garage? In other words, whats the dollar amount swimming around in your head for you to say "SOLD!"?

Glad to hear you're keeping the "nice" one, and the Beemer! Still want a ride in that thing too Pat!

Later Buddy!

I was talking to Jason about this. I'd kill for this car. I got out of hand and threatend to kill Jason for the car however, He now has a restraining order on me.

How did you fit a 9" wide tire in the front???? Is it because of the coilover's or something. I thought it was impossible to fit a 9" tire.

ooo and very nice car BTW. good luck with the sale.

I hate to see the car go, but I can understand him selling. With two other money hogs that are fast, and considering there's not much time to track or a track near here anymore, it's sensible.

This is a sweet car. Even I have my memories and I didn't own it. It can be made street legal, however, for the track, you would have a blast competing with Ferrari's, Lamborghini's and the like. Even a former F1 driver by the name of Roland always had high regards for this car, even while he was driving his F50 on the same track/day.

It definitely has a great motor and more power than it can put down, even with the large track tires.

I do not think the new owner will be dissappointed!

Glad to hear you're keeping the white car Pat!

Default Follow up responses

Heres a few follow ups to the questions:

- Kelly: I may be wanting to simplify my life a bit, but I'm not getting out of the speed world entirely - just simplifying. (give you an example, on Friday the BMW blew the newly rebuilt turbo - arghhh). You coming out to Denver this summer for All Ford Day?

- BlackonBlack89 - the car has coilovers and the front rims are 9" wide to accomodate a larger footprint. There are no clearance issues.

- All - thanks for the comments on the car. It really is a pretty special machine with all the tricks necessary to run with the best, plus some really nice safety features such as the new Recaro's ($1500 alone), full 5 point harnesses, a full 8-point roll cage and a Halon fire extinguishing system. The engine is running very strong and I was looking forward to dialing in the suspension, but have not had enought time to do so, plus with 3 race tracks in Denver closed down, we have precious few places to run.

- Re: Wheels - The wheels you see on the picture are my track wheels for the White SHO that have race rubber. They will not be included. The wheels that will be included are much better and lighter racing wheels with 9" wide fronts and 8" wide rears. They were custom build two piece and costs a small fortune.

- Shomurph - I'm seriously wanting to find a way to keep this car as i really don't want to sell. But I need it out of the garage and away from my "to do list" so that I don't feel guilty about not getting much use out of it.

- Pricing - I don't know what I will price it at, but its got well over $30k invested in it, and will sell for a fraction of that number.

I'll be doing some final suspension/brake work (new bearings and TCE two piece rotors), polishing it up, get new pics and then put it up for sale on ebay with a reserve that I'd feel comfortable keeping it should it not sell.

It would be really nice to see someone take the time to finish tuning the suspension and getting some great lap times. With all the suspension, oil and tranny cooling, air damns, and amazing power, this should be a really competitive machine almost anywhere. Power wise, its simply amazing and pulls most anything on the track; but just needs a bit of suspension tuning and balance to get the handling to match the power.

werd. nothing wrong with putting a toy up in a closet until you want to play with it.

Especially with the money you have in it......even if you drive it once every two years its worth keeping. Howver you'd make more money parting it out. Other than finding a place to put it....doesn't really cost anything to keep it.

Just being devil's advocate!!

SOOOO very tempting.

Too bad I just bought a house, and the wife has since cut off my SHO budget.

If you need to pass an emissions test, it probably will not make it without adding some catalytic converters. I managed to get my white street SHO (s/c with blown out cats) to pass emissions with out cats, but it took several passes and some E85 along with pulling the spout connector to pass the test. I have not bothered to try to pass the track SHO.

The windshield wiper motors would need to be hooked back up, and the turn signals switch and wiring added back (my plan but never got to it). This should make it street legal. I drove it to and from the track as is. Its an all out race car though, and I don't think you'd want this as a commutter without heat or a/c which are all stripped for weight conservation.

the other thing you'd need to carefully consider is driving a caged car without a helmet. I'm not sure thats real safe.

Because if there can, this thread is dangerously close to that threshold.

Yes, I've blasted it down the street many times. I even had a cop follow me too.
If thats the case, my car isn't technically legal because it does not have a front lisence plate.

Let's look at it this way... You can easily put a front plate on. Not a big deal. Having blinkers, windshield wipers and passing emmissions is in a different catagory. For any type of inspection, it will not pass... Without a front plate, they'll just tell you to put one on. I do not run a front plate on any of my cars either, but that doesn't make the car unsafe.

Asking your original question not referencing being legal is an open-ended question. I once took one of Tom's buggies out all day through Phoenix, on the streets in the middle of the summer. Not many people would consider that something they want to drive every day, I won't do it again under those circumstances. Personal preference plays a big part in whether it is "streetable" by the drivers standards.

It is a stripped down car. The only heat you get is from the engine bay heat passing through the holes in the firewall. There is no AC. It has been driven on fairly long trips to the track, however, whether you want to put up with it daily or weekly, is a different story. It's also not a "cruising" type car. It is very loud, you have no tunes, and once your buckled in, there's not much room to move around. BUT, if you were to get the said above working to pass inspection, it can be driven on the street, giving it a "streetable" status.
