Default Power Steering Hose Splice

My hoses are leaking badly, 1-pint every 2-3 days! Smokes like crazy when hot. Mechanic said the high pressure hose was leaking and the return hose was swollen and leaking at the fittings.

I've had the hoses running to the cooler spliced with metal tubes. Can I do the same to the high pressure hose? Or is the pressure too high? Shop said the hose alone was like $260! Can these be fabbed up by an AC hose shop or similar?

The pressure is too high for splicing. Besides, it's usually the fitting the fails, not the hose itself.

Gates makes a replacement hose that are less than that. Replacement is a PITA, though.

You can look them up at http://www.gates.com/part_locator/in...cation_id=3002 since you didn't identify your vehicle completely. If an ATX, it should be 363550 (around $25). If an MTX, it should be a 359370 (around $45).

Return lines can be spliced as the pressure is low enough. The lines themselves are just bulk lines that sell for around a buck/ft at most auroparts stores.

rockauto.com usually has good prices and a 5% discount code if you can wait a couple of days. You will have to search by part number as their application guide may not show these items.

Your local parts store should be able to get you the proper hose.

The Return lines you can splice if you have to. But for sure not the pressure lines.

FWIW, when I put my AUX. P/S cooler on, i "spliced" the lines. I used barb'd connectors on both sides. I did not have a leak on the return line, however i did have a very small leak on the pressure side. It wasnt too bad... maybe a few drips here and there... but i think the hose was not sitting on the connector correctly.
