Default Odd looking Mercury Sable at Ford HQ...if it is a Sable

Well, I was at the Canadian Ford HQ and spotted this thing yesterday. I was admiring the 10-15 EcoBoost SHO's in the visitor lot when i spotted this thing. I thought it was an SHO too, since it has slicers. Upon closer inspection......i knew it wasnt an SHO. Looks like a Sable but the front doesnt look like any Sable I've ever seen. Also it had lettering on the rear that said "Aluminum" and then on the opposite side it said "Mercury" but no Sable badging.

Is this some sort of riced out Sable? I like the front grill, looks pretty cool. Although the car could do without the odd vinyl on the front and rear bumpers.

Perhaps it's the one-off aluminum-bodied sable they made waaaaaaay back when as an experiment in vehicle lightness?

Well this vehicle is registered and on the road. The plates are registered in Quebec. The car was parked at HQ yesterday and today when i went back, i decided to snap some pictures.

I know I've heard about aluminum bodied vehicles that ford tested. Wasnt sure if it was the Taurus or Sable though.

Was going through some old threads and one of them mentioned Ford's Aluminum Intensive Vehicle (AIV)

AIV vinyls are on the front bumper and twice on the rear trunk lid.

What would a super rare aluminum bodied Sable be doing on the road? And 16 yrs after they were made? The thread i checked out said only 20 were made. Anyone have other pictures of these cars or any other information?

Definitely need to check with a magnet. And a strip of felt, so you don't mess the paint up!

If it is (and I'm pretty sure it is), you need to track the owner down through the license plate up and get his ass on here!

Should have looked under the front end it to see if it had a SHO engine.

I just Googled it out of curiosity and the page I found said they did have the SHO engine in them and that the car actually performed well.

That is really cool to come across in person. Definitely do some more detective work! Try and find the owner if you can.

I don't think all the AIV Sables were crushed, I hope not. The AIV project was largely a Canadian project using Canadian vendors. Multimatic did a lot of the design, tooling and manufacturing for the various body parts. Multimatic had a lot to do with the Ninja Turtle SHO's and Larry Holt, MM's CEO, was a hard core SHO guy.

Tho there was at least one AIV Sable SHO, all the AIV's were not SHO-powered. The AIV Sable SHO was built by the crazies at Multimatic and entered in the 1995 One Lap of America in the mid-priced sedan category. I remember being parked next to it at the start of One Lap in the Dearborn Hyatt Regency parking lot and thinking, "Why would someone put Baer brakes on a Sable?" About then the team leader Ed Luce walked up, complemented me on my SHO, and introduced their driver Scott Maxwell. Ed was one of the AIV program managers for Ford, and as he started to tell me about the car - how light it was, and that it had a SHO drivetrain, Koni suspension, etc., and I already knew about Scott Maxwell and his racing history, I pretty much knew that my SHO One Lap team was screwed.

This car was light, fast, and every time Maxwell got behind the wheel on a track, he drove it like he'd stolen it, and the results speak for themselves: the AIV Sable SHO placed 15th out of 85 entries and set some absolutely blistering lap times.

http://www.onelapofamerica.com/histo...s.shtml?y=1995

There was a bit of grousing amongst the Mid-priced sedan entries that the AIV Sable SHO was not a production car, and truth be known, it wasn't, but Brock Yates let their class win stand.

I'm positive it's aluminum.

Good luck finding a normal gen 2 Taurus that spent it's life in Eastern Canada that has no rust.

I'd love to find one of those. So much stiffer and lighter than steel, and no rust. Just fatiguing to worry about.

Wow, googled AIV and it's curb weight is 2900 pounds.

Went back to Ford HQ and talked to the guard (she thought was giving me this crazy look when i asked about the sable but i explained everything behind it). They have no clue who's car it is or if the owner was currently in the building. So i put my Oak-Land Ford business card between the weatherstrip and the driver window (but tucked it to the right of the side view mirror to prevent wind blowing it away) with my personal contact info. The interior looks exactly the same as my car...except it says mercury on the dash, looks hot in mocha ;0

But ya, i am pretty excited about this find. I really hope the owner contacts me!

And i shouldve looked underneath the car! Hopefully it's still there tomorrow or monday. It doesnt look like its moved since yesterday when i first saw it.

This isn't just a cool find; this is monumental. This is right up there with just randomly seeing the original GN-X prototype chilling in some guy's garage. If there were only 20 of these made, then it can be safely said that less than 5 still are still on the roads after all these years. And that's being generous; I'd be surprised if more than 2 or 3 were on the roads. And the fact that it is not only still roadworthy but a daily driver is just incredible.

OP you have got to leave a note under the windshield!

I live about a 10 minute drive away

That lower fascia has all those cut outs. The front is what caused me to question what the vehicle is. I was thinking someone put on some random body kit and it had the slits for cooling or whatever.

This is definitely a "10" on the cool factor. It's amazing that, after 20+ years, we are still coming across information(and vehicles) that add to the rich history of the Taurus/Sable engineering(hits and misses) exercises that were undertaken.

I'm surprised nobdy has mentioned the 2011 Super Duty in the background of the first picture lol

I got to drive one a few weeks ago. Our dealership had a 2011 F-series dually arrive yesterday from a transport. The fender on the dually looks sort of stupid. But the rear single wheel 2011's look hot.

EDIT: I would love to buy it.....but what makes you think they would want to sell it? :P
