Okay thought I would update this thread with some good literature taken from the rebuild kit's manual. It is not much of a manual as it is actually about 8 pages of hardcore info! Here it is:

FORD AX4S (AXOD-E)

REDESIGNED: The rear lube cross-over tube, lube tube seal, and the rear planetary support have been redesigned beginning in mid-year 1993 and introduced as a running change in model year 1993. The redesign changes improve lube flow to the planetary gears.

PARTS EFFECTED:

Rear lube cross-over tube has a longer, smaller diameter end to pass completely through the case and into the revised lube seal, which is now pressed into the new rear planetary support.

Rear lube tube seal is now pressed into the new rear planetary support to accomodate the new rear lube cross-over tube.

Rear planetary support is now bored to accept the new rear lube tube seal.

INTERCHANGEABLILTY:
1.) The redesigned parts listed above ARE NOT interchangeable with previous design level parts.
2.) The redesigned parts listed above may be used on any 1991 or 1992 AXOD-E transaxle, however ALL THREE PIECES MUST BE USED TOGETHER.
3.) The redesigned parts listed above CANNOT be used on 1986-90 AXOD transaxles, because of the governor circuit.

SERVICE INFORMATION:

NOTE: The new design lube tube should be installed into the new rear lube seal first, and trhen press the other end into the case, to prevent seal damage. If the seal is damaged, a delay to drive will be the result, as this is in the drive oil ciruit.

FORD AX4S (AXOD-E)

FOWARD CLUTCH PISTON CHANGED TO STEEL

The AX4S /AXOD-E transmission has historically had a breakage problem with the foward clutch piston. Several re-designed aluminum pistons wer tried, but the were also prone to failure. A steel piston was then introduced that helped the problem.

In 1996, the Windstar with the 3.8L V-6 started using the bonded piston from the AX4N with reasonable success. However, an intermittent neutral condition appeared even with the bonded foward piston, so a second-design bonded assemble was made available for service. This was also put into production around mid-1997.

Ford released a third-design forward clutch piston used only in the Windstar with the 3.8L V-6. Ford deleted the apply wave ring from the forward clutch pack, creating the need for a taller piston with a rew part number. The taller piston was put into production for the Windstars after 9/8/97. The 3.8L Windstar platform also shared the direct and intermediate obnded pistons with the AX4N since 1996.

CHANGE: The forward clutch piston has been changed from aluminum to steel. This is a material change only - no dimensional changes.

REASONS: The previous aluminum material was reported to crack and break. A crackedc piston could result in the following:

-No forward or reverse engagement.
-Delayed forward and/or reverse engagtement.
-Shifts out of gear when coming to a stop.

To date there have been four different versions of the forward piston. The new steel version should not be prone to the previous persisent cracking problem.

INTERCHANGEABLITY: The steel piston can be used to back serice ALL previous modelsof the AXOD, AXOD-E, and AX4S stransaxles. DO NOT use any service stock of the aluminum forward cluch piston that may happen to be on dealer shelves. (((***Very important!!***)))

ALWAYS replace the foward cluch piston with the new steel pison using the OEM Part numbers listed below:

(FORWARD CLUTCH)

F1DZ-7A262-A - 3rd Design ((((((DO NOT USE)))))))))

F4DZ-7A262-A - 1st Design Steel: Taurus exc. SHO, Sable, Lincln 1990-UP, Windstar 3.0L 1995-UP

F4DZ-7A262-B - 1st Design Steel: ONLY Taurus SHO 3.2L 1993-UP
F5DZ-7A262-A - 1st Design Bonded Rubber: Windstar w/3.8L 1996-1997

SUPERSEDES TO:
F8DZ-7A262-AB - 2nd Design Bonded Rubber: Windstar w/3.8L to 9/8/1997

F88Z-7A262-AA - 3rd Design Bonded Rubber: Windstar w/3.8L 9/8/1997-UP

TURBINE SHAFT O-RINGS

Midway through the 1994 model year, Ford changed the turbine shaft. The shaft increased in diameter and the spline changed from a 23 teeth to a 25 teeth. The 25-tooth shaft requires a new slightly larger O-ring. The part number for the new O-ring is 17021 9OEM # FOTZ-6749-B). It has been included in Trans Tec Kits since date code M95.

Due to the closeness in size between the two O-rings, the 25-tooth shaft O-ring has green identification marks on it, while the 23-tooth O-ring is plain black.

((( I am extremely tired and am going to bed, I will fix typoes and such later))))

My car is 08/93, it is a '94 but should have the trans with a 23 spline shaft?

kputer, sorry I haven't responded, haven't been on the forum much this year. I will find out and let you know that is if you are still wondering!?! Again sorry I didn't get back to you sooner.

I have seen a couple people post about transmission problems, i.e. specific problems they are having with their atx's of different models and years. I have charts in paper and print form, but honestly don't have time nor energy to scan em off. I found a cool lil site about two years ago, I hope that this will help some of you guys out

Started back up again! Here is some new info. I am searching out the best kit/combo to rebuild the tranny. To be honest I was taken for my money on a kit I bought a couple years ago and lost interest with rebuilding it. * Unit has an inset impeller for HIGH STALL in SHO

**when changed to the 25 spline (will find out date and update)**

25 Spline Turbine

Thanks, I'm fixing to start the rebuild on my one of two transmissions tomorrow. Well, it'll be teardown, I still need to get the rebuild kit, shift kit, solenoids, etc., etc. I read on one of these threads that the E40D(up-grade)o.d. sprag was discontinued, but it looked like they listed the wrong number for the replacement sprag, so I was wondering about that. Was the E40D sprag the one that was discontinued or was that the wrong sprag?

AX4S/AX4N Interchange/ Inter-trouble Great 3 page article on gearing and some differences between AXOD-E transmissions both AX4S & AX4N.

Another insightful website for Taurus (SHO)/Sable transmission info HERE

A lot of you may have already seen these sites. The reason I started this thread was to collect all the information on our transmissions and to put it together on one thread. I will be adding/merging the parts pictures thread into this as soon as I can, along with detailed pictures on the tear down and rebuild of the tranny.
