Default Shaky speedometer.

My speedometer on my 94 ATX is shaky/bouncy at certain speeds. The VSS and lower speedo cable are new. Is this a sign that the speedometer is on it's way out or do I have a bad cable? The only one left to replace is the upper.

Must be common. My 93 does it between 50 and 70.

Replace the upper cable. Mine was like that then the upper broke. After I replaced it, no issues.

So my speedometer stopped working today. In case anyone wasn't following my older threads I had a problem with it a while ago. I bought the car with it not working last year and I found the upper and lower cables disconnected so I hooked them back up and it woorked for a bit then it did this bouncing up and down thing, it would drop from 70 to 0 MPH and then back up to 70 MPH and then stopped working all together just like it did today. VSS and lower speedometer cable are new, just replaced them a few weeks ago and like I said it worked up until now.

Mine works fine up until i hit 75. Once i hit 75 it will jump to 90 and then i hear a rattle type noise coming from the cluster. If i give the dash a good wack on top it will jump back to 75 for a moment and then back up to 90. The rattle goes away when it goes back down to 75.

It started working again today but I think I am going to swap the cluster and upper speedometer cable to see if that fixes the problem.

My 95 MTX will fluctuate on a really cold morning at about 70, it jumps + or - 3-5mph when you speed up or slow down a bit....but once warm is smooth. I had a 92 LX and it was really shakey at all speeds untill the torque converter locked up, and then it was smooth, never did understand that.

Bad head. If it actually stopping then starting like that I would guess bad head. My 92 had an issue with that.

Can I use an MTX speedometer? I'm concerned about the O/D off light.
