Default Will '92-'93 12 tooth starter fit earlier MTX?

I searched the forum and I apologize in advance if I missed the answer to this question. I have a '90 engine and want to install a '92-'93 12 tooth starter. The 12 tooth drive gear is larger in diameter than the earlier 9 tooths. Does the later starter housing compensate for the diameter difference so it will work with the older MTX flywheel or do you need to get a later flywheel or ring gear to go with it. If you need the later flywheel will the older clutch work with it? I realize there are wiring differences and I have already taken care of that.

Nah, slap it up there and she how she does. I put a 93 ATX starter on my 92.... my older starter had 16 teeth I think? This one just spins it a little faster. Should work just fine.

UNLESS... you have the smaller clutch setup maybe? Smaller flywheel would make me thing that it wouldn't line up if that were the case.

Bolts up fine, the housing must compensate.

You 90 has a solinoid on the wall of the engine compartment. In 92, they started putting the solinoid on the starter. So, the starter will bolt up, but you will need to do something about the wiring.

What he said. The 9-tooth and 12-tooth starters with the integrated solenoid are completely interchangeable, and they are mechanically interchangeable with the early starters with a separate solenoid.

If you have the separate solenoid and want to use a starter with the integrated solenoid you need to do the associated wiring changes, but the mechanical fitment isn't an issue. They are all mechanically interchangeable.

i too have done this, you just need to put the positive wire to the negative post (with the negative wire on it) on the fender solenoid and run the wire down to power the starter just like how it normally is.
