Car dies while driving and won't restart

    Ok guy's and girls,

    My mom's 95 ATX SHO dies while driving down the road. I have to pull the car over to the side of the road and let it sit for 20-30min and she starts back up again. The car will only run for about 5 miles before the same situation happens over again. The car will not start, but cranks, until 20-30min has passed. This sounds like an ignition module, fuel pump or CPS problem. Could I be right?

    I would imagine that the water pump is leaking onto the CPS causing it to act like that. A educational saturday afternoon and you would be good as new.

    This might be fuel pump more than CPS, the CPS is a more random failure type. The fact that the car works for 5 miles then stops, then works later only to stop about 5 miles later points more to the problem being the pump. Maybe the fuel pump gets hot, then stops, then after it cools down, the cycle begins again. I would check for fuel pressure.

    That is what happens to the CPS when the coolant is dripping on it.

    During my 10+ years of owning my SHO I have three problems that give similar indications:

    1. Fuel pump. Mine only happened during hot weather and would result in the 20-30 min shutdown until the fuel pump cooled off. Sad to say I didn't know it was the fuel pump! Car would start but would only spit and spew and would die when put in gear. Burned out my first starter with this problem and probably contributed to the premature death of others.

    2. Water pump leaking on CPS. Took Ford 14 days to figure this one out. Fortunately, it was under warranty and they gave me a rental car. Didn't do much for my confidence in their mechanics! Indication was a few drops of coolant on my garage floor. Wouldn't start the next day after sitting overnight. Unless the leak is massive, I don't think the car will usually shutdown while driving; more likely after driving and sitting.

    3. Bad CPS. Car shuts down when it takes a notion and will not start; no sputtering or spewing when trying to start.

    If your car is sputtering and spewing when you try to start it, I would favor the fuel pump; if not, most likely the CPS.
